A PROMISING HORROR PREMISE FAILS TO FIND ITS FOOTING

by Mark Sweney

A secluded estate, a mysterious host, and a group of unsuspecting guests—the setup for a new horror film holds undeniable potential. The story follows several young men who accept an invitation to a remote country home, anticipating a romantic getaway. Instead, they find themselves participants in a deadly game, a concept that blends the high stakes of a survival thriller with the cruel mechanics of a twisted competition.

Despite an intriguing foundation, the execution falters. For a horror narrative to succeed, it must immerse the audience, creating a world that feels tangible within its own rules. Here, that crucial sense of believability never solidifies. The atmosphere often wavers, leaving viewers as detached observers rather than feeling the tension alongside the characters. Individual scenes show flashes of what could have been, but they fail to coalesce into a gripping or coherent whole.

The film’s identity feels uncertain from the start. It juggles elements of folk horror, psychological suspense, and brutal survival scenarios, but these genres clash rather than complement each other. This lack of a consistent tone makes the experience disjointed, undermining any sustained dread or narrative momentum.

Further weakening the impact is a palpable lack of conviction in the details. The peril facing the characters often feels unconvincing, with restraints and threats that seem implausibly flimsy. This undercuts the central premise, making the life-or-death stakes difficult to take seriously.

Ultimately, what begins as a clever and darkly humorous concept struggles to deliver on its promise, resulting in a viewing experience that feels more like a missed opportunity than a compelling nightmare.
