Golfer Rory McIlroy has claimed the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, marking the first time in over three decades a golfer has received the honour.

The Northern Irish star’s victory caps an extraordinary year, headlined by his long-awaited triumph at the Masters Tournament in April, which completed his career Grand Slam. His pivotal role in leading Team Europe to a dramatic Ryder Cup victory on American soil further solidified his standout season.

Upon accepting the award, an emotional McIlroy reflected on his journey, stating the year had been “the stuff dreams are made of.” He dedicated the honour to his family, acknowledging their unwavering support throughout his career.

The ceremony saw England rugby union’s Ellie Kildunne secure second place in the public vote, recognised for her instrumental performances in the Red Roses’ World Cup-winning campaign. Formula One World Champion Lando Norris finished in third.

Further accolades for the sport of golf were awarded, with Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup team named Team of the Year. The Coach of the Year award was presented to England women’s football manager Sarina Wiegman.

The evening also featured poignant moments beyond the world of sport. The Helen Rollason Award for outstanding achievement in adversity was presented to two fathers, David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar, who ran the London Marathon to honour their young daughters, tragically lost in the 2024 Southport attack. Their tribute moved the audience, with McIlroy later calling the men “heroes.”

Other winners included Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis as World Sport Star of the Year and young footballer Michelle Agyemang as Young Sports Personality of the Year. Football legend Thierry Henry received the Lifetime Achievement award.
