A HOLIDAY TASTE TEST: RANKING POPULAR CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES

by Kiran Stacey

As the festive season approaches, many of us face the familiar task of selecting chocolates for gifting or indulging. To help narrow the choices, I sampled a range of widely available chocolate truffles, evaluating them on the essentials: a quality chocolate shell with a satisfying snap and a ganache interior that is rich, smooth, and balanced.

The ideal truffle hinges on two simple, non-negotiable components: good chocolate and good cream. A dark chocolate in the 60-70% cocoa range offers depth without harsh bitterness, while the cream should create a ganache that melts luxuriously. Any added flavors—be it salt, liqueur, or spice—should play a supporting role, never overpowering the core chocolate experience.

Here’s how the selections measured up, from the most recommended to those best avoided.

Top Tier: Worth the Splurge
One box stood out for its overall quality and value. While the chocolate shell was slightly thicker than ideal, the chocolate itself was commendable, offering a smooth, sweet profile with a classic cocoa depth. The box includes a generous assortment of milk, hazelnut, blond, and dark varieties, making it a strong contender for a thoughtful gift.

Solid Performers
Another option featured decent chocolate with a well-executed salted caramel filling that struck a pleasant balance between sweet and savory. The packaging was notably elegant. A different brand offered a truffle with a good, dusty cocoa flavor that remained smooth, though it didn’t reach the heights of artisanal, bean-to-bar chocolate.

Flawed but Enjoyable
Some truffles had enjoyable elements but notable imbalances. One with an orange and hazelnut praline filling suffered from an orange oil flavor so intense it masked the nutty notes. Another was more reminiscent of a sweet biscuit than chocolate, making it easy to eat but perhaps overly sugary for some palates.

Bottom of the Box
The remaining truffles were difficult to recommend. Critiques included a ganache with an artificial, candle-like scent; a lack of pronounced chocolate flavor paired with excessive sweetness; and a synthetic berry taste that might appeal only to younger tastes. One variety had a lingering, artificial vanilla note, while another was plagued by a waxy texture that refused to melt properly, paired with a similarly artificial-tasting salted caramel filling.

In the end, the search reaffirms that with truffles, simplicity and quality ingredients are paramount. This season, a careful selection can ensure your chocolate indulgence is a truly decadent one.
