The online fashion giant Shein has instituted a worldwide prohibition on the sale of adult-themed dolls following the launch of a formal investigation by French authorities. Prosecutors are examining whether certain items available on the platform bore an inappropriate resemblance to minors.
In response to the inquiry, a company representative stated that Shein is prepared to cooperate fully with judicial officials, including providing relevant transaction details if formally requested. The retailer has removed all related product listings and imagery from its sites.
The controversy emerged just as Shein prepares to launch its inaugural permanent retail location within a prominent Paris department store this week. The planned opening has drawn significant public criticism, with a government official previously warning of potential consequences if the sale of such items continued.
An independent consumer protection agency initially flagged the products, prompting Shein to withdraw them and initiate an internal review. The company has since committed to establishing a specialized team to oversee content compliance on its marketplace.
This incident adds to existing regulatory challenges for the retailer in Europe. It has faced substantial financial penalties in France this year for violations concerning digital advertising, product transparency, and environmental disclosures. Broader European Union institutions are also conducting separate reviews related to product safety and the environmental footprint of fast-fashion business models.
Despite the backlash, the management of the Paris department store housing the new Shein outlet has defended its partnership, clarifying that only a specific range of apparel and accessories designed for that location will be available for sale.
