AUSTRALIA BATTLES BACK AFTER EARLY STUMBLES IN ADELAIDE TEST

by Steven Morris

A resilient century from Alex Carey anchored Australia’s recovery on the opening day of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, guiding the hosts to a total of 326 for eight at stumps.

Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Australia’s top order faltered against a probing England attack, slumping to 94 for four shortly after lunch. However, a composed 82 from Usman Khawaja and a determined, emotionally charged 106 from local hero Carey on his home ground steadied the innings. Their partnership wrested back the initiative for the hosts after a series of loose shots had handed England early breakthroughs.

England’s bowling effort was spearheaded by the returning Jofra Archer, who was the pick of the attack with figures of three for 29 from his disciplined spells. Support came from Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue, though their lines were inconsistent at times in the intense heat. Spinner Will Jacks proved expensive but managed to claim two vital wickets, including that of the centurion Carey late in the day.

The closing session saw Australia’s lower order, led by Mitchell Starc’s unbeaten 33, add valuable runs to push the total beyond 300. While England will be pleased to have taken eight wickets on what appeared a good batting surface, the tourists know they must quickly dismiss the remaining Australian batsmen on day two to keep their hopes in the series alive. With clear skies and another hot day forecast, the stage is set for a crucial battle as England look to post a strong reply.
