TEST YOUR CRICKET SAVVY: CAN YOU PINPOINT THE FIELDING POSITIONS?

by Denis Campbell

The language of cricket is a world unto itself. From batsmen being dismissed for a “duck” to bowlers delivering a “doosra,” the sport’s unique terminology can be a puzzle for the uninitiated. One of the most visually complex aspects is the array of fielding positions, whose names—like “silly point,” “square leg,” and “gully”—often sound more like abstract concepts than locations on a pitch.

How well do you truly know your way around the cricket field? A new interactive challenge puts your knowledge to the test.

The task is straightforward but demanding: for each of 15 named fielding positions, you must drag a fielder to the correct spot on a virtual oval. A beige rectangle represents the pitch, with a bowler marked at one end and a right-handed batter at the other. Guidelines distinguish the infield from the outfield and mark the boundary rope.

You can adjust your placement as many times as you like before locking in your answer and moving to the next position. One point is awarded for each correctly placed fielder. Upon completion, your score is revealed, along with how your performance stacks up against other participants.

It’s a definitive check on whether you can tell your “fine leg” from your “third man,” and a engaging way to decode the sport’s distinctive spatial lexicon. Are you ready to take your stand?
