LARA CROFT EMBARKS ON A DUAL COMEBACK WITH NEW ADVENTURES

by Mark Sweney

The iconic adventurer Lara Croft is set to return to the gaming world in a significant way, with two major new projects announced. After a notable absence since 2018, the beloved treasure hunter will headline a brand-new title and a comprehensive remake, both slated for release in the coming years.

The first project, titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst, is scheduled for a 2027 launch. Described as a return to the classic, confident persona of the character from the franchise’s origins, the game will follow Croft’s expedition across northern India. Her mission pits her against rival hunters in a high-stakes race to secure ancient artifacts rumored to possess world-altering power. The title is in development at the series’ longtime steward, Crystal Dynamics.

Arriving sooner is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, planned for 2026. This project is a from-the-ground-up reimagining of the very first 1996 game that catapulted Lara Croft to fame. Developed in partnership with Flying Wild Hog, the remake promises modernized gameplay mechanics, including revamped combat and intricate puzzle design, built using contemporary technology to realize a vision beyond the limitations of the original hardware. The aim is to faithfully capture the spirit of the seminal adventure while offering a fresh experience for today’s audience.

In both games, the voice and performance of Lara Croft will be provided by actor Alix Wilton Regan. The character’s enduring legacy, established over three decades, continues to expand with these games and a separate live-action television adaptation also in development. The guiding philosophy for the character’s future appears to be evolution, maintaining her essential traits while allowing each new journey to further define and refine her persona.
