INTER CLAIMS SUMMIT AS SERIE A EMBRACES CHAOS OVER CONSISTENCY

by Denis Campbell

The Serie A table has a new leader, and its ascent reflects a season increasingly defined by volatility rather than steady accumulation. Inter Milan reached the summit following a hard-fought 2-1 victory away to Genoa, a result that underscored a compelling league trend: the methodical pursuit of points is being overshadowed by a tumultuous, all-or-nothing race.

Under manager Cristian Chivu, Inter’s campaign has been a study in extremes. They have registered the most victories in the division but have also suffered several defeats, remarkably avoiding any draws thus far. This pattern has propelled them to the top, suggesting that in the current landscape, consistent winning—even amid setbacks—trumps a more cautious, unbeaten run. Chivu has remained defiant in the face of early-season skepticism, insisting his team’s resilience and position validate their project, despite stumbles in both domestic and European competition.

The contrast with their city rivals is stark. AC Milan, under Max Allegri, remain undefeated since an opening-day shock but have repeatedly stumbled against lesser opposition, dropping points for the fifth time in a draw with Sassuolo. While they have excelled in head-to-head clashes with top sides, their inability to dispatch teams from the lower half of the table has hampered their progress. Like Napoli before them, Milan have the theoretical advantage of a schedule free from European football, but they have yet to convert that into a decisive lead.

Elsewhere, the pressures of a congested fixture list appear to be taking a severe toll. Napoli, led by Antonio Conte, looked physically and mentally exhausted in a loss to Udinese. Conte’s renowned reluctance to rotate his squad, a strategy that demands peak physical conditioning, seems ill-suited to the rigors of a multi-front season, raising questions about their sustainability.

At the opposite end of the table, a crisis is deepening. Fiorentina’s nightmare season hit a new low with a last-gasp defeat to Hellas Verona, leaving them rooted to the bottom without a single win after 15 matches. History offers no comfort for a team in such a predicament, and desperate measures, including an enforced training retreat, have so far yielded no turnaround. Their plight stands as a sobering counterpoint to the thrilling unpredictability at the top.

The emerging narrative of this Serie A season is clear. The path to glory is no longer a cautious marathon but a breathless sprint punctuated by dramatic highs and lows. Inter currently leads this emotional charge, while others struggle to adapt to a league where dropping points, even while avoiding defeat, can mean losing ground.
