The controversy stems from the club’s decision to bar reporters and photographers from its stadium following the publication of reports examining legal allegations concerning the club’s owner. The owner, a prominent figure who made his fortune in gambling, is named in a High Court lawsuit. The case includes claims, which the owner strongly denies, about the methods used by a gambling syndicate. A subsequent report raised separate questions about large-scale sports betting.
In response, the club stated it had asked the outlet to amend or balance its initial article, and upon its refusal, deemed it “inappropriate” to continue granting its staff access to club facilities. A club spokesperson asserted that while the publication remains free to report, the club is not obligated to provide accreditation while what it calls “misleading” coverage continues.
The ban has been met with widespread criticism from across the media and political landscape.
