AUSTRALIA BOLSTERS SQUAD FOR CRUCIAL ADELAIDE TEST AS CUMMINS RETURNS

by Denis Campbell

Australia has announced its 15-player squad for the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, with the headline being the anticipated return of captain Pat Cummins to the helm. The fast bowler, who has been sidelined with a lower back issue since July, is set to lead the side as they aim to secure the series with a commanding 2-0 lead.

While Cummins’ comeback strengthens the bowling attack, selection questions remain in the batting order. Veteran Usman Khawaja retains his place in the squad despite concerns over a back injury that saw him miss the second Test in Brisbane. His path back into the starting eleven appears complicated, however, following strong performances from the new opening partnership of Jake Weatherald and Travis Head. Khawaja’s experience and versatility could see him considered for a middle-order role instead.

The composition of the middle order itself is a point of discussion. Beneath the established duo of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith, positions five through seven offer several options, including all-rounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster, as well as wicketkeepers Alex Carey and Josh Inglis.

The bowling unit welcomes not only Cummins but also the likely recall of veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who was surprisingly omitted for the Gabba Test. His inclusion in Adelaide is widely expected. The pace attack will be without Josh Hazlewood for the remainder of the series due to a calf-related setback, but the return of Cummins, alongside Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland, provides significant firepower.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey, coming off a standout performance in Brisbane, acknowledged the team’s strong position but stressed the need for continued improvement. “We’re in a good spot, but the job is far from done,” Carey stated. “England are a quality side, and we know we have to maintain our standards to finish the series strongly.”

The squad will also have fast bowler Jhye Richardson training with them as he continues his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery.
