A NEW CHAPTER IN PARMA: CARLOS CUESTA ON HIS COACHING JOURNEY AND THE PAINFUL ARSENAL DEPARTURE

by Denis Campbell

Carlos Cuesta, now at the helm of Parma, reflects on the pivotal choice that reshaped his career. Leaving Arsenal, he says, was perhaps the toughest decision he has ever made.

At 30, Cuesta has already dedicated half his life to coaching. His appointment at Parma made him the youngest head coach in Serie A in over eight decades. The Spaniard describes coaching not as a career choice, but as an inner necessity—a calling he recognized in his late teens.

Before his move to Italy, Cuesta spent five formative years as an assistant to Mikel Arteta at Arsenal. There, he evolved from a diligent young coach into a figure ready for a top managerial role. His influence at the London club was significant, earning the trust of players and staff alike.

When Parma’s offer arrived, Cuesta faced a profound dilemma. He was part of a thriving project at Arsenal, working alongside Arteta, whom he describes as an incredible mentor and person. Yet, the allure of leading a historic club like Parma, with its storied past and current challenges, proved irresistible.

Cuesta’s coaching journey began early. Growing up in Mallorca, he was immersed in the local football scene, where his mother ran a café at his childhood club. By 15, he was already coaching younger players, driven by a deep passion for understanding the game.

His path took him from Atlético Madrid’s academy, which he calls his “university,” to Juventus, where he honed his tactical knowledge. A connection with Arteta led to his role at Arsenal, where he focused on individual player development, quickly earning respect within the squad.

Now at Parma, Cuesta oversees one of the youngest teams in Europe’s top leagues. He believes his age can foster empathy with players, but emphasizes the need for a competitive mindset to navigate a challenging season. His approach blends idealism with pragmatism, acknowledging that a coach must adapt to the demands of each situation.

Cuesta remains a voracious reader, drawing inspiration from diverse sources, from ancient philosophy to sports leadership. Yet, his focus is firmly on the present. For him, success is built day by day, with each moment holding the key to progress.

As he builds his own legacy at Parma, Cuesta’s journey continues—a testament to dedication, self-belief, and the courage to embrace new challenges.
