AUSTRALIA SINGLES OUT JOE ROOT AS KEY TARGET AHEAD OF ASHES OPENER

Australian fast bowler Scott Boland has identified England’s Joe Root as the prized wicket his side aims to claim in the upcoming Ashes series. The remarks come as Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, intensifies his recovery from a back injury ahead of the second Test.

With England enjoying a rest day after a warm-up match, Australian players began training under warm conditions at Perth Stadium. Boland, who is set to lead the attack in Cummins’ absence, pointed to Root as the batsman Australia hopes to neutralize.

“You always aim to challenge the top players,” Boland stated. “When someone like Joe Root is at the crease, limiting his influence is crucial.”

Boland enjoyed a breakthrough series against England during the 2021-22 tour, but found conditions tougher in the 2023 contest in England. He acknowledged lessons learned from that experience, suggesting minor adjustments rather than an overhaul of his approach.

Meanwhile, Cummins participated in an extended net session as he works toward a return for the day-night Test in Brisbane next month. His absence in Perth will see Steve Smith resume the captaincy for the series opener.
